California Casserole


2 lbs. cubed top sirloin steak
1 T paprika
1/3 c. flour
1/4 c. oil
1 c. water

Cube meat and coat with flour and paprika. Brown meat in 1/4 c. oil. Add salt and pepper, and 1 cup water. Cover and simmer 30 mins., until tender. Transfer to baking dish.


In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, mix:
1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 + 3/4 c. water

Heat and bring to a boil. Add prepared meat to the sauce, and 1 + 3/4 c. small cooked pearl onions.
Top with Poppy Seed Dumplings and bake uncovered at 425F for 20-25 minutes.

Poppy Seed Dumplings

2 c. flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 T poultry seasoning
1 T celery seeds
1 T onion flakes
1 T poppy seeds
1/4 c. oil
1 c. milk

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, dry ones first. Make dumplings (golf-ball size) and roll each in 1/4 c. melted butter, then in 1 c. bread crumbs. Place small mounds on top of stew.
